Technique is super important – we can all agree.
So why do coaches only do “technique” work slow?
Why do we stop doing “technique” work right before a meet?
Context is everything here.
To build technique we must practice fast swimming. It’s the same context your racing in! If you practice slow technique and then go and race fast I guarantee you won’t hold on to any of it.
If you stop doing technique work right before a meet it doesn’t make sense. If the work is helping then why would you stop? If it wasn’t helping then why do it? I can’t seem to follow the logic here.
If your technique work is taking weeks and weeks to get any improvement out of your swimmers I don’t think you know how to coach better technique.
The skill of coaching is this: How can you take what used to take 4-6 weeks and get it done in 20 minutes of coaching?
That is real progression and real coaching.
Day 1: 25 min to accomplish perfect stroke
Day 2: 15 min to accomplish perfect stroke
Day 3: 2 min to accomplish perfect stroke
Day 4: Instantly (coach now must challenge skill to make it STICK!)
